Single stage centrifugal pumps are the most common pump for fluid transfer in high flow rate, low pressure installations. Centrifugal water pumps are common single stage pumps, however due to the wide range of materials available centrifugal pumps can also be used for other low viscosity fluids such as fuel, oils and petrochemicals. Centrifugal pumps are used to transport fluids by the conversion of rotational kinetic energy to the hydrodynamic energy of the fluid flow. The rotational energy typically comes from an engine or electric motor. The fluid enters the pump impeller along or near to the rotating axis and is accelerated by the impeller, flowing radially outward into a diffuse or volute chamber (casing), from where it exits.

A horizontal single-stage pump is a type of centrifugal pump that operates with only one impeller. Here are some key features and aspects of horizontal single-stage pumps:

  1. Design: These pumps have a simple design with a single impeller mounted on a horizontal shaft. The impeller rotates within a casing.

  2. Functionality: They are used to transfer liquids from one location to another, typically in industrial, commercial, or municipal applications.

  3. Centrifugal Action: Like all centrifugal pumps, horizontal single-stage pumps work based on the principle of centrifugal force. The rotating impeller generates centrifugal force, which pushes the fluid outward, creating a vacuum at the center, and thus, drawing fluid into the pump.

  4. Horizontal Orientation: Unlike vertical pumps, which have their shafts and impellers arranged vertically, horizontal pumps have a horizontal shaft. This makes them suitable for applications where space is limited or where it's more convenient to have a horizontal layout.

  5. Efficiency: Horizontal single-stage pumps are known for their high efficiency, especially when compared to some other types of pumps. They can handle a wide range of flow rates and pressures efficiently.

  6. Applications: These pumps find applications in various industries such as water supply, wastewater treatment, irrigation, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), chemical processing, power generation, and more.

  7. Maintenance: Maintenance for horizontal single-stage pumps typically involves tasks such as checking and replacing seals, bearings, and impellers, as well as ensuring proper alignment of the shaft and regular lubrication.

  8. Materials: They can be constructed from various materials depending on the application and the type of fluid being pumped. Common materials include cast iron, stainless steel, bronze, and various types of plastics or composites.
